History of the cellars

The museum was founded in 1994 in the atmospheric cellars under the Prešov Town Hall, where it has been housed ever since.
The history of the cellars is remarkable. In 1504, after a great fire in the town, they were rebuilt into a new town wine house, dominated by the main vaulted hall that now serves as the tasting room. The other rooms were used to store wine.
The link with wine was broken in the 18th century, in a time of unrest and peasant uprisings. The Town Hall above the cellars, at the forefront of the anti-Habsburg campaign, saw the cellars turned into a prison. During later wars they served as a town shelter, and afterwards as storage without any maintenance or care. Before their reconstruction they were flooded, dilapidated and marked by time.
Thanks to the support of the city, the reconstruction of the cellars into today’s Wine Museum began at the end of 1993.
